The two principles of Train and Kemp advice are:
- Our advice should be client orientated and not engineering orientated and should add value as perceived by the client.
- The fieldwork/investigations/research on which the advice is based should be thorough and methodical.
It is an old but good adage that consultants offer advice and clients take decisions; it is not for us to take client's decisions for them. This means that our advice needs be thorough and explore all appropriate options.
In reports it is the discussions that have the greatest value. It is also where the greatest misunderstandings can arise and we take care in massing and explaining what can be complex engineering issues, particularly where the outcome is finely balanced.
As applied scientists our investigations are scientific and methodical and include measurements wherever possible together with survey photographs or sketches.
It is rare that a structure is so dilapidated that it cannot be repaired or strengthened. Whilst such technical solutions may not always be economic, we will strive to comply with the clients' objectives. Occasionally the client objectives are not realistic, in which case we will present the achievable with an explanation why there is a shortfall.
