Norman invited to Athens to evaluate construction for 28th Olympic Games

Norman Train was invited to accompany Laura Peek, a reporter with The Times Newspaper, to Athens, to give an appraisal of the construction of stadiums that are being built for the Olympics, scheduled to begin in August 2004, and whether the building work would be completed on time.

During his trip, Norman made visits to a number of the key Olympic venues including The Agora, (Main Olympic Venue), the Karaiskaki Football Stadium and the Faliro Sports Pavilion. He also undertook visits to the key infrastructure projects being undertaken as part of the preparation for the games.

According to The Times less than 50% of the 39 Olympic venues are complete.

Norman’s evaluation concluded that the venues would be ready but not complete and felt that the Greeks will have to downgrade what they are looking to achieve. He stated that the start of the Games cannot move and hence any overrun in construction will squeeze the commissioning period for the facilities.

His conclusion! “The Games are a major undertaking for a country of only 10 million people. The Olympic buildings and infrastructure will be completed to a level. I just hope that this is sufficient for the competitors and spectators and that the spectacle fulfils the Greek dream and pride in holding the 28th modern Olympiad.”
