Lily heads to El Salvador

In October 2006 Lily Ryan-Collins will travel to El Salvador for a year long placement, working on housing projects with REDES - The Salvadorean Foundation for Reconstruction and Development.

El Salvador is prone to natural disasters and many thousands of Salvadoreans have lost their homes in earthquakes or are forced, through poverty, to live in areas at high risk of landslides or flooding. REDES provide families with secure, earthquake resistant housing with a supply of clean water, sanitary facilities and electricity. For families who are homeless or live in high-risk locations, a new home is a new start, providing physical and financial security and the chance to plan for a better future.

Lily said "I worked with REDES for six weeks in the winter of 2005, carrying out needs assessments, creating risk management maps and helping with applications to funding bodies. It was an eye opening experience; the communities I worked with were warm, welcoming and optimistic despite the challenges they faced in every day life and it was great to feel that I was using my engineering skills for a worthwhile cause. By returning to work with the Foundation for a longer period I will be able to take on a more significant role, eventually managing housing construction projects with responsibility for logistics, construction supervision and liaison with community-based groups".

"Train and Kemp has been very supportive of my wish to carry out this work, granting me both an extended leave of absence, and financial aid. I am grateful to the Practice for helping to make this placement possible".
