::Oxford Street Office Refurbishment whilst the Big Macs keeping frying ::

291 Oxford Street is a seven storey Edwardian mansion block constructed in filler joists and load bearing masonry. It is proposed to refurbish the upper floors, infill the lightwell and extend the top floor over the whole footprint of the block to maximise the office area at 2500m2. The challenge however is to undertake this major refurbishment whilst MacDonald’s and Sketchers remain operational at ground and basement levels.

We looked at a number of schemes ranging from new construction behind retained facades to limited cut and carve of internal walls explained John Murphy, the associate in charge. “We have decided on a hybrid where all the internal lightwell enclosing walls are removed together with as many other internal walls as possible” he added.
