::Conservation of 300 year old church::

St Thomas’s is a grade listed deconsecrated church building which is over 300 year old. The construction of the railways and London Bridge Station saw the demolition of the original hospital which surrounded it and two world wars and boring of the jubilee line station beneath it have also taken their toll; [the latter caused the church to settle almost 100mm]. Within the roof space is a medical museum complete with an original Georgian operating theatre.

The church was in a parlous state and was on the English Heritage Register of listed buildings at risk before the Cathedral Group acquired it as their new headquarters building. Significant repairs were required in addressing the damage associated with the Jubilee Line tunnels and Train and Kemp were appointed as structural engineers and project managers to oversee these which were undertaken whilst the museum remained operational. The practice also undertook the structural alterations with the refurbishment

Working in close association with the conservation architect, damaged brickwork and stonework has been replaced or stitched.

The nave has been modified to provide modern office accommodation, requiring the existing gallery to be extended to provide additional space. The existing altar base has been revealed and is to be incorporated in the new raised floor. The vaulted crypt has also been restored and partitioned to provide meeting rooms and rest rooms.
