::Norman Train comments on Terminal 5 Heave::

The Daily Mail and the Evening Standard both had articles on Monday 1 June on the heave and cracking within the basement at Heathrow Terminal 5.

Speaking on behalf of the Institution of Structural Engineers, Norman explained that Terminal 5 is far larger below ground than the terminal buildings above and that with the removal of the weight of the soil in forming the basement, the clay beneath had less load squashing it down and hence it had expanded or heaved. This happens in all deep basements and the consultants designing Terminal 5 foundations took this into account in their design with void formers beneath the basement slab.

With multi-storey basements, such heave needs to be considered, particularly where the basement is larger than the footprint of the building over.
